Hans J. Wegner designed the CH33 for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1957. The chair was manufactured for about ten years before a long pause; production resumed in 2012. Its compact proportions and gently splayed legs give it a distinct place among Wegner’s dining chairs. The CH33P version illustrated here has an upholstered seat.
A broad, curved panel forms the backrest. Made from pressed veneer, it narrows toward rounded ends and displays the circular caps over its attachments. The rear legs continue upward to support this panel, while the seat links all four legs. Wood is concentrated around these connections and becomes slimmer toward the floor, making the structure’s changing demands visible.
The seat and back remain separate surfaces with a generous opening between them. Their soft outlines are repeated in the rails beneath the seat, so the chair reads as a related set of curves. The resulting form is restrained but carefully articulated. It demonstrates how a small dining chair can accommodate shaped wood, upholstery and exposed construction without losing a clear silhouette.
