Hans J. Wegner’s CH22 lounge chair entered production in 1950 as part of his first collection for Carl Hansen & Søn. Its principal materials are wood and paper cord. The wide backrest is the most prominent element: a gently curved wooden panel held above an open frame, with visible caps marking the points of attachment.

The smaller details explain how the chair is assembled. Each arm support passes around the side rail and broadens beneath the armrest. At the front, the legs rise through the corners of the seat frame. The cord is led around the frame and through a groove in the rear rail, keeping the woven surface closely integrated with its wooden support.

After a long interruption, Carl Hansen & Søn resumed production in 2016. The renewed version follows the principles of the original construction while using more precise modern production methods. The illustrated chair makes these relationships visible: a solid back, a pliable seat and narrow curved arms are joined by a frame whose exposed connections contribute to the overall composition.
