Composition 8 by Vasily Kandinsky

Vasily Kandinsky completed Composition 8 in July 1923, a year after joining the Bauhaus faculty. The oil painting measures 140 by 201 centimeters and belongs to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Circles, triangles, curved lines, and diagonals spread across a light ground.

The forms differ greatly in scale and weight. A large dark circle anchors one corner, while fine lines and smaller colored shapes carry the eye across the surface. Some elements overlap; others remain isolated. Their varied spacing can suggest a musical arrangement, with emphatic notes and quieter intervals, although the picture does not illustrate a specific piece of music.

Kandinsky adopted geometric elements associated with the Russian avant-garde while maintaining his belief in the expressive power of form and color. Composition 8 makes that combination especially clear: its shapes are precise, but their relationships remain lively and open to interpretation. Solomon Guggenheim purchased the painting after meeting Kandinsky in 1929. It became the first of more than 150 works by the artist to enter the museum's collection.
