Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed the Arco floor lamp for Flos in 1962. A long stainless-steel stem carries its aluminum reflector outward from a white Carrara marble base. The arrangement allows a floor-standing object to place light overhead, reaching into an area that might otherwise be served by a ceiling fixture.

The base is a counterweight, not simply a decorative pedestal. Flos describes a hole through the marble that permits the use of a wooden pole when moving it. Above, the telescopic stem and adjustable reflector make the lamp’s reach and direction part of the design. The contrast between a heavy block and a thin arc makes the balancing principle immediately visible.

Arco expands the archive’s furniture and accessories material with an object that organizes space through light. Its broad reach can be compared with the compact counterbalanced arms of the Tizio desk lamp. Each makes mechanical support visible, but one operates at the scale of a room while the other addresses a working surface.
